Guilty Plea

Two young men have pleaded guilty to arson related to a fire that claimed Yorkton’s old curling rink on Front Street October 8.

Both Jonah Kitchemonia and Dion Shingoose were arrested last week following an investigation into the blaze and scheduled for bail hearings, Kitchemonia on Monday and Shingoose Tuesday. Judge Ross Green ordered Bail Verification Reports.

Neither bail hearing proceeded after the guilty pleas were entered, but both were released on conditions based on the bail reports pending pre-sentence reports.

Sentencing is scheduled for January 26, 2015.

Due to the seriousness of the offences, both men were released on statutory conditions plus they are required to: live at an approved residence; abide by a 24-hour curfew; wear an electronic monitoring device; abstain from alcohol and non-prescription drugs; have no contact with each other or another co-accused, Tayon Metzler.

Metzler was charged November 16. His next court appearance is scheduled for November 19.

In addition Shingoose is prohibited from possessing a knife except for the purpose of eating and is to have no contact with two other named persons.

In Canada, arson is indictable by law and carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison
